Short introduction

We were approached by Musik i Lejet in spring 2022, with a request to debug and enhance their React Native-based application for the upcoming festival. Our team completed the project within a short timeline and enhanced the user experience by in depth code-review and debugging, while also adding new features and revamping the UI design.

The Story of Musik i Lejet

It all started in 2009 when the twins Andreas and Kristian Grauengaard and two of their friends decided to create a party in their seaside hometown. The idea was to have a party where old friends could meet, listen to good music, have fun, and boost the development of Tisvildeleje. In the beginning, 700 people stopped by, and 16 bands played music, then the festival grew steadily, and in 2017, 10,000 people visited, and 40 different bands performed. Musik i Lejet became popular throughout the years and achieved a strong position in the Danish festival market. Every year, this 3-day festival is the highlight of the summer in Tisvildeleje, where leading trends in music, art, and gastronomy are present in picture-perfect surroundings on the coast of Denmark.

Process

Scoping the needs

In spring 2022, the Musik i Lejet team asked us to debug their existing application and modify its layout and color palette. The festival was in July, so we had only a couple of months to complete the first version of the app. It was a great help that our team did not have to start from scratch, as they already had a React-Native app from the pre-covid times. However, they had not used it for several years, and the employees who had developed it did not work at the company anymore. This is where our team came in by analyzing the source code of the app, to figure out which features were there and what it would take to make it work again.

Revamping the design of the app

The Musik i Lejet app already had a complete design, so the graphical part only included updating the UI with the newest colors, sponsor logos, and the menu based on the existing UX. During the planning stage, we had multiple sessions with the client to discuss which features of the app we should keep. Our designers used Figma to visualize the concept with flow charts and play around with mock-ups to pick the best solution. Due to the tight deadline, this fun part of the project was short, because we had to focus on figuring out what is possible in a brief time and leaving enough room for thorough testing.

Challenges and solution

We faced several challenges while fine-tuning the Musik i Lejet app, such as legacy code that was no longer supported by the latest frameworks, compatibility issues with new devices, and layout adjustments that required careful alignment and spacing. We solved these problems by rewriting some parts of the code and implementing new features to improve the app’s functionality. Additionally, we modified the layout and color scheme to match the festival’s updated design for the upcoming year. In order to ensure a seamless user experience across different devices, for the front-end, we used the Reactive Native technology. The back-end (CMS) is their own Musik i Lejet website, which is managed by a dedicated volunteer at Musik I Lejet. Lastly, we integrated the app with their website, so all content from there can be retrieved in realtime.

Results

The Musik i Lejet team was pleased with the outcome of the project. We fixed all the bugs and enhanced the performance and usability of the application, moreover, the festival attendees enjoyed using the new features and gave us positive feedback. No bugs were reported during the three-day festival. As for the app itself, the user can check the schedule of the programs, stay updated by reading the news, and navigate through the map. Overall, the modifications to the layout and color palette provided a cohesive branding experience for the event. As an ongoing project, we will continue to support Musik i Lejet in their future festivals to ensure a seamless digital experience for their attendees.

2023

Our collaboration with Musik i Lejet continued in 2023, as we had made some changes in the app before the festival started. First, even though we had a map in the previous version, this year we updated it. Second, just like last year, we updated the sponsors and the color palette. Finally, we added a radio player, which is a new feature in the app.
